Our campus serves not only undergraduate military-connected students, but also graduate students. Read more about our recent graduate from the College of Law, Fernando Silva:
Fernando graduated with his law degree this semester at the University of Illinois College of Law. He grew up in Cicero, Illinois. Upon his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, Fernando was stationed on the forward-deployed USS Tortuga in Sasebo, Japan. Fernando grew a strong attraction to public service during a humanitarian mission in response to typhoon Haiyan in November 2013.
Fernando later served on the USS Stockdale in Naval Base San Diego. As a Gas Turbine Technician, he monitored the ship’s propulsion plant through two deployments patrolling the Korean Peninsula. Fernando was honorably discharged in February 2017 and started college to pursue a career in law.
When first visiting the campus, Fernando noticed the Chez Veteran Center. He was welcomed by the friendly staff and residents at the Center. He was impressed by the number of services at the Center. The Chez Veteran Center connected Fernando to a local V.A. representative to assist him with his disability claims. Its on-campus location has also allowed Fernando to conveniently access his Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Fernando often uses the gym facilities to alleviate the stress of law school. In addition to providing invaluable resources, the Chez Veteran Center has been a place where Fernando has made long-lasting friendships with other student-veterans.
Since the start of law school, Fernando has volunteered in several pro bono programs including an immigration screening clinic, and legal aid work for low-income families, and individuals impacted by domestic violence. Recently, Fernando finished a semester working in his law school’s Family Advocacy Law Clinic, where Fernando represented children and families involved in child neglect and abuse cases. Fernando hopes he can continue providing pro bono services once he becomes a licensed attorney.
