Military Veterans: Community Health and Wellness (CHLH 494)
Dr. Dustin Lange and Jason Sakowski co-taught a new course offered by the Chez Veterans Center in the Spring of 2022 that was tailored for future practitioners that will provide health and wellness services to Veterans. The objective of this course was to educate students on the dominant factors impacting Military/Veteran communities today. The course began with an immersion into Military/Veteran culture (military entrance such as how and why people join, branch differences and missions, structure, hierarchy and rank, population demographics, organizational characteristics) before examining prominent community health issues impacting Military/Veteran cohorts and communities at large. Issues explored include military transitions and reintegration, suicide & mental health, military sexual trauma, food insecurity and nutrition, substance abuse, and homelessness.
The course will continue to be co-taught by Dr. Lange and Jason Sakowski this Spring 2023.
