2023 Chez Veterans Center Veterans Day Celebration featuring Mr. Samuel K. Skinner

The distinguished keynote speaker, Mr. Samuel K. Skinner, an Army Veteran and esteemed alumnus, shared insights from his illustrious career, including serving as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and White House Chief of Staff during President George H.W. Bush’s administration. Notably, Mr. Skinner’s multifaceted experience, particularly his collaboration with the United States Coast Guard, highlighted his commitment to enhancing transportation safety and security. University of Illinois alum Samuel K. Skinner, an Army Veteran whose career included roles as U.S. Secretary of Transportation and White House Chief of Staff, speaks of his days as an student, finding his path through service with the ROTC, leading to him to a career in service to his country. He charged the audience to become influencers, saying to be sure that when they see a veteran, to tell them, “Thank you for your service.” He said that many veterans and their families don’t hear that much, it makes you feel better and it influences other people to follow your example. He was the guest speaker as military-connected students, staff, and community members gather during a Veterans Day Celebration at the Illini Union to pay tribute to military service members.
