No one understands the military better than those who serve. As a current military service member, Veteran, or family member, you can help solve the issues impacting your community by engaging with us in research.

Participate in Current Research Studies

Rural Veteran Study

Purpose: To understand how to improve access to services for rural Military/Veteran communities.

Eligibility: reside within a rural community (less than 60,000 persons) in the state of Illinois, previously served but no longer serving in the U.S. military OR off duty (not currently on federal or state orders) Reserve and National Guard members

Participation entails: complete a 20 minute online survey, complete 1 (hour long) virtual interview

Compensation: $40 Amazon gift card

How to participate: Need access to a smart phone or Zoom to participate. Complete intake form at this link.

 

Serving Rural Veterans Research Study

Purpose: To understand how to improve access to services for rural Military/Veteran communities.

Eligibility: 18 years of age or older, represent a community organization that provides services to military service members, Veterans, and/or family members residing in a rural community (less than 60,000 persons) within the state of Illinois

Participation entails: complete a 20 minute online survey, complete 1 (hour long) virtual interview

Compensation: $40 Amazon gift card

Veteran Caregivers Mindfulness Study

Purpose: To develop a form of mindfulness intervention for caregivers of Veterans.

Eligibility: 18 years of age or older, be an unpaid, informal caregiver, currently care for a Veteran with a neurocognitive disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder

Participation entails: Meeting for two focus groups that will last from 90 to 120 minutes each

Compensation: $30 gift card for each focus group

Aging Caregivers of Veterans Study

Purpose: To understand the needs and experiences of caregivers of Veterans with brain-related disorders to identify and provide recommendations for new programs and services.

Eligibility: 60 years of age or older, married/partnered or widow of a veteran with a brain-related disorder (including traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, post-traumatic epilepsy, and/or any other neurocognitive disorders, current unpaid caregiver of a veteran with brain-related disorders or former caregiver of a veteran with brain-related disorders who has passed away.

Participation entails: Complete a brief online survey and one 90-minute online small group interview

Compensation: $40 gift card

Tinnitus and Hearing Loss Study

Purpose: To discover how the use of MRI can help us to better understand tinnitus and hearing loss in order to development new treatments and therapies.

Eligibility: Current or previous military service, between the ages of 21- 64

Participation entails: Visiting the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to complete a behavioral assessment (about half and hour) and an MRI (1 hr).

Compensation: up to $75 plus reimbursement for parking

Student Veteran Transition Study

Purpose: (1) Help student Veterans transition successfully from service into higher education; (2) help develop needed services and workshops for student Veterans or other stakeholders.

Eligibility: (1) completed military basic/initial entry training, and (2) current full-time graduate or undergraduate student attending a four-year university

Participation entails: Take a three-part survey (each part takes about 20 minutes), earn $10 for each part. Earn a total of $30 when completing all three parts of the survey.

Compensation: Up to $30

Veteran Brain Health Study

Purpose: To understand the needs of Veterans who struggle with brain health (PTSD, TBI, mental health) and what changes Veterans and caregivers want for better diagnosing and treatment options. Part of this study also focuses on understanding how Veterans want to be engaged in research.

Eligibility: Current or past service members and caregivers/spouses

Participation entails: Completing a 15-20 minute online survey

Compensation: NA

Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Epilepsy Study

Purpose: To learn more about the relationship between Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Epilepsy.

Eligibility: 18 years old or older, current or previous military service, have been diagnosed with either Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), willing and able to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

Participation entails: Visiting the Beckman Institute on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus to complete health questionnaires (about half an hour) and one MRI scan (one hour)

Compensation: $15 per hour for time and travel
