Meet Robert Chromniak, who is originally from Warsaw, Poland but has lived in the suburbs of Chicago for most of his life. He is currently studying Urban and Regional Planning with a concentration in policy and planning, while also serving as a Sergeant in the Illinois Army National Guard. Recently, Robert returned from a mission in Europe supporting Operation Assure, Deter, Reinforce.

Robert decided to pursue higher education as the first person in his family in the U.S. to earn a bachelor’s degree. After high school, he worked various jobs and realized a degree would open doors for his future. His goal is to improve his life, and he sees education as key to that.
The transition from military to student life has been challenging for him, particularly with time management and social interactions. The military’s structured environment contrasts with the flexibility of college, where Robert has to create his own schedule and adapt to unexpected situations. Additionally, the military’s emphasis on discipline and respect differs from the more casual nature of student life.
The Chez Veterans Center has been an invaluable support system for Robert, offering reassurance even though he doesn’t use it regularly. The discipline, adaptability, and accountability he learned in the military help him stay organized and focused in his studies. While not involved in any campus organizations yet, Robert enjoys his free time reading, working out, and watching Illini sports. Despite the challenges, Robert is optimistic about his future and confident that his education will lead to greater opportunities!
