Meet Klayton, a soon-to-be graduate who is finishing up his degree in Kinesiology with a focus on Physical Education. After serving in the United States Air Force, Klayton decided to pursue higher education and is now preparing to embark on a career in teaching. As he wraps up his time at university, he’s excited for the next chapter of his life. Here’s a closer look at his journey and the experiences that shaped his path.
I asked him, what are your experiences in the military? He responded:
“I served four years in the United States Air Force as an Aircrew Egress Systems Specialist, or more broadly, an aircraft mechanic. I was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico. I worked on the ejection seats and canopies of F-16 fighter jets. My work resulted in the successful ejection of a pilot-in-training at Holloman Air Force Base.”
After this, I asked, what led you to pursue higher education? And he said,
“I had always wanted to become the first in my family to attend a four-year university, but did not have an affordable option coming out of high school. Once I became aware that the military would pay for my education, I decided to enlist after I graduated high school. While enlisted, I earned an associate’s degree from Illinois Central College.”

I then asked him What the most challenging part of transitioning from military life to student life was for him, and he responded:
“The most challenging part of transitioning from the military life to student life was no longer having my friends with me every day. In the military, I spent each day with some of the closest and best friends I have ever met. Although I may not have always enjoyed work, I certainly enjoyed each day I spent with them. Thankfully, I have been able to stay connected to my friends, and the support they provide encourages me to keep working hard any time I face a new challenge.”
My next question was, are you involved in any organizations or clubs at school? He said:
“I am a board member of the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) club.”
My final question was, what are your career aspirations after graduation? And his response was:
“Following graduation in December, I will begin teaching Elementary Physical
