Continuing with our student facing services and implementing new initiatives to include dependent specific programming, this semester we welcomed an Army dependent as she completed her internship for her Bachelor in Social Work. This student excelled in her work and was also awarded the School of Social Work Spring 2024 BSW Excellence in Field Award when nominated by Ingrid Wheeler, LCSW and Assistant Director overseeing Behavioral Health Programs at the Chez Veterans Center. Ms. Deltang shares about her internship experience and writes:

My name is Sharlei Orwii Deltang, and I am a recent graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Social Work. My journey has been deeply influenced by my upbringing in a military family. With my father’s 20 years of service in the Army, I developed a profound passion for serving those who dedicate their lives to our country, including their families. This passion led me to the Chez Veterans Center, where I had the privilege of interning during my final semester.
During my time at the Center, I embraced challenges with enthusiasm and dedication. From organizing our first field trip in collaboration with University Primary School to hosting engaging events with McKinley Health Center and establishing the Military Connections Collective, every moment was an opportunity for growth and making a difference. Through case management and community building, I forged meaningful connections with fellow students and faculty, further solidifying my commitment to supporting the military-connected population.
As I embark on the next chapter of my journey, pursuing an MSW graduate program with an Advanced Clinical Concentration in Mental Health at the University of Illinois, my focus remains on working directly with children, parents, and families while challenging the stigma surrounding mental health. Ultimately, my goal is to continue supporting the military-connected population by working for the VA.
None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of the Chez Veterans Center! I am deeply grateful for the student workers and faculty whose mentorship, guidance, and encouragement throughout this transformative experience. Special thanks to Ingrid Wheeler for her exceptional supervision and to all the faculty who have played a role in my growth and development as a social work intern!
As I move forward, I carry the ethos of community and support instilled by the Chez Veterans Center with me, and I am committed to making a positive impact wherever I go!
