This semester, we’re excited to welcome Kassidi Crist to the Chez Veterans Center team. As our on-site VA representative, Kassidi will be at the Center every Tuesday from 0800–1530, offering direct support to student Veterans at the University of Illinois with navigating VA services, benefits, and the transition into academic life.
A New Face With a Clear Purpose
Kassidi describes her role in a way that gets right to the heart of her work: “My role at Chez is to represent the VA and support student Veterans in accessing and effectively utilizing VA services.”
Her presence on campus strengthens the bridge between the VA and the University of Illinois, ensuring students have someone knowledgeable, approachable, and fully dedicated to their success.
Inspired by Family, Driven by Service
Kassidi’s path to the VA began with stories from her great-grandfather, a World War II Veteran whose experiences shaped her respect for those who serve. “I was inspired to work at the VA after hearing stories from my great-grandfather’s service in World War II, which fostered my deep respect and admiration for all who have served.”
Since joining the Post-9/11 M2VA team, she has focused on supporting Veterans at every stage of life, with a special commitment to helping them transition into civilian and student roles.
What She Finds Most Rewarding
For Kassidi, the best part of her work is simple and meaningful: “Providing guidance to student Veterans while helping reduce the burden associated with transitioning to student life.”
Her approach is grounded in empathy, clarity, and a genuine desire to make students’ lives easier.
A Career Rooted in Compassion
Before joining the Center, Kassidi built a career centered on service and connection. After earning her BSW, she worked as a hospice social worker in Kankakee County, where she spent meaningful time with Veterans at the Manteno Veterans’ Home. She later completed her MSW at the University of Illinois and interned at the Illiana VA Medical Center — an experience that led to a full-time role with the VA, where she has proudly remained.
Her background brings a thoughtful, relational perspective to her work with students.
Why Centers Like Ours Matter
Kassidi sees the Chez Veterans Center as a vital resource for student Veterans. “Chez is an essential resource, offering student Veterans a strong sense of community along with supportive services designed to address the challenges of transitioning to civilian and academic life.”
Her insight reinforces the importance of creating spaces where Veterans feel supported, connected, and understood.
A Fun Fact You Might Not Guess
Though she was born and raised a Cubs fan, Kassidi admits she’s been to Busch Stadium more often than Wrigley Field — a fun twist for any baseball fan.
Life Beyond Work
Outside the office, Kassidi enjoys attending community events with her family and has a deep love for all things Halloween and horror. Her enthusiasm for community and creativity shines through in everything she does.
