As a Aaliyah Zhu completes her Master of Science in Management at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, her journey reflects resilience, reinvention, and the power of community through major life transitions.
During her time at Illinois, Aaliyah learned just how capable she is of persisting through change and uncertainty. After completing a medical board process and transitioning out of the Illinois Army National Guard, she simultaneously finished her bachelor’s degree and began her master’s program. That experience showed her that she can navigate major life shifts while continuing to move forward academically and professionally.
One of the most grounding parts of her transition was her support system—especially her husband, whom she met on campus. They married during her first semester of graduate school, and his support became a steady source of encouragement throughout her journey.
A meaningful highlight of her time at Illinois was being invited to Honorable Sam Skinner’s Veterans Day presentation in 2023 while serving as Miss Illinois United States. The experience was both humbling and affirming, connecting her military background, public service, and leadership in a way that left a lasting impact.
When reflecting on advice for future military-connected students, Aaliyah emphasizes the importance of getting involved early. Building community and connecting with others who share similar experiences can make a significant difference in navigating both academic and personal transition.
She also shares a message she would give her first-semester self: life may take unexpected turns, but those experiences ultimately lead to growth, strength, and new opportunities.
After graduation, Aaliyah plans to continue growing her company, Financial Literacy Diaries. Through her work, she advocates for equitable financial policy and helps financial professionals and educators integrate narrative-based education into their classrooms and organizations. Her mission reflects a deep commitment to expanding access to financial knowledge in meaningful and practical ways.
