One of the Center’s students and work-studies was interviewed by campus Undergraduate Admissions for a podcast titled Journeys to College and Beyond. Robert Chromniak, Sergeant in the Illinois Army National Guard—an immigrant, a first‑generation college student, and a soon‑to‑be graduate of the University of Illinois.
Rob shared candidly about what it’s like to transition from the structured world of military service to the open, often overwhelming landscape of college life. For him, the Chez Veteran Center became more than just a resource hub; it became a home base. A place where Veterans and military‑connected students can find community, purpose, and support while navigating academics, family life, and personal growth.
Rob also opened up about discovering his passion for urban planning, a field he never imagined entering, and the pride he feels as he prepares to become the first in his family to graduate college in the United States.
His message to other Veterans considering college?
Don’t be afraid to take the step. Your service prepared you for more than you realize.
