For Angela Perez-Martinez, the University of Illinois experience was filled with growth, discovery, and community.

Reflecting on her time at Illinois, one of the biggest takeaways was learning more about herself. Along the way, Angela discovered new passions and interests that helped reshape her goals and aspirations, opening the door to exciting possibilities for the future.

As a military-connected student, having a strong support system made all the difference. The Chez Veterans Center (CVC) served as a constant reminder that she was not alone. Surrounded by fellow veterans who understood the unique experiences and challenges of military-connected students, Angela found a sense of belonging and encouragement. That support was complemented by her family—especially her sister and parents—who have been by her side from the very beginning.

One of the most meaningful parts of Angela’s Illinois experience was connecting with other student veterans through the CVC. Having a community that understood both the military experience and the transition to campus life created friendships and memories that will last long after graduation.

“I loved meeting other student veterans and having a community at UIUC that truly understands my military side and the challenges of being a military-connected student,” Angela shared.

For future military-connected students, Angela encourages getting involved and taking advantage of the many resources available on campus. Whether attending events, joining student organizations, or exploring new opportunities, she believes that staying connected can make the college experience even more rewarding.

If Angela could give her first-semester self one piece of advice, it would be: “It will truly be okay. You will meet the best people and make the best memories.”

Looking ahead, Angela is excited to enter the workforce while pursuing a master’s degree and continuing her service with the Illinois Army National Guard. Her commitment to professional growth, higher education, and military service reflects a dedication to making a positive impact both in her career and her community.
