For Andres Gomez, an Astronomy and Data Science student and member of the Illinois Air National Guard, the journey at Illinois has been one of growth, independence, and exploration.
During his time on campus, Andres discovered just how capable he is of navigating life on his own terms. Learning to take initiative and make decisions about his future helped him build confidence while figuring out what career path feels right for him.
Like many students who move away from home, the transition wasn’t easy. Andres credits staying connected with family and friends for helping him stay grounded. That steady support system made a big difference as he adjusted to a new environment and the challenges that came with it.
One of the most impactful moments for Andres was his first visit to the Chez Veterans Center. From the start, he found the space welcoming, informative, and supportive. He recalls feeling heard, with his concerns met by thoughtful guidance and real solutions. That experience showed him the CVC could be a reliable resource throughout his time at Illinois.

For incoming military-connected students, Andres emphasizes the importance of using available resources and leaning into one’s community. He encourages students to stay connected, be open to new experiences, and not be afraid of making mistakes along the way.
Reflecting, Andres shares that he would have reached out to advisors earlier to explore his career interests more deeply. That early guidance, he believes, could have helped shape his academic path sooner.
Looking ahead, Andres is still exploring his next steps. He is considering pursuing a Master’s in Statistics or Analytics at the University of Illinois, or returning home to begin his career in data science. No matter which path he chooses, his time at Illinois has prepared him to move forward with confidence and curiosity.
