For many students, the holidays are a time to gather with family and share traditions. But for some, especially military-connected students, returning home for Thanksgiving isn’t always possible. This year, the Chez Veterans Center hosted a Thanksgiving dinner with one simple but powerful goal: to make sure no one had to spend the holiday alone.
“Thanksgiving is about connection and family,” said Robert Chromniak, President of Illini Veterans. “For a lot of us, those traditional celebrations aren’t always possible because of deployments, training, or parents serving. This dinner gave us a chance to build our own family for the night.”
The event went beyond a meal—it was a space to share stories, laughs, and camaraderie with people who understand the unique experiences of military-connected students. “It didn’t feel like just a dinner,” Chromniak added. “It felt like creating our own family, built on connection, support, and the simple act of sharing a meal together.”
Food, Fun, and Memorable Moments
One of the most heartwarming parts of the dinner was seeing everyone contribute a dish. From traditional family recipes to experimental creations, the effort and thoughtfulness behind each plate made the night feel deeply personal.
Another highlight was cooking the turkey together with help from the Chez staff. “They supported us, but they also gave us the freedom to figure things out ourselves,” Chromniak said. “It felt like a real team effort—something you don’t usually get during a college holiday break.”
Building Community and Support
Beyond the food and festivities, the Thanksgiving dinner strengthened the sense of community at Chez. Photos and stories shared after the event extended the warmth to Veterans who couldn’t attend in person, showing that everyone is welcome to be part of this supportive environment.
“Events like this put faces to names and give people a reason to show up next time,” Chromniak noted. “For students who couldn’t go home, it brought comfort knowing they spent Thanksgiving with good people. And for families, it’s reassuring to know their loved ones are surrounded by support.”
In the end, the Thanksgiving dinner at the Chez Veterans Center wasn’t just about a meal—it was about belonging, connection, and creating a home away from home. For those who attended, it was a reminder that even far from home, there’s a community looking out for one another.
