For Mayra G. Ortega, a Nursing student and member of the Illinois Army National Guard, her journey at Illinois has been anything but linear. What began in Spring 2021 as a History major quickly evolved into a path shaped by real-world experience, resilience, and determination. After stepping away from school during the pandemic to work as a patient care technician and later deploying overseas as a medic, Mayra returned to campus with a renewed sense of purpose, ultimately pursuing a career in nursing.
Through these experiences, Mayra learned that success doesn’t happen by chance. Instead, it is built over time through consistent effort, strong decision-making, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. Each stage of her journey, from completing prerequisites to navigating the challenges of nursing school, reinforced her ability to overcome obstacles and stay committed to her goals.
A key part of her success was the support system she found along the way. In addition to encouragement from home, the Chez Veterans Center provided a strong sense of community and access to life-changing resources. From scholarships and career services to mentorship opportunities and hands-on guidance, the CVC helped Mayra build confidence and prepare for her future. As a first-generation college student, she credits these resources with helping shape her academic and professional trajectory.
One of her most meaningful memories is her very first day at the CVC. From being warmly welcomed by staff and residents to quickly forming connections with fellow students, she immediately felt a sense of belonging. That first night, settling into her room, hearing the energy of the community around her, and looking out toward Carle, became a powerful moment of reflection and anticipation for everything ahead.
Mayra encourages incoming military-connected students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them and not be afraid to put themselves out there. She emphasizes that the resources, connections, and support systems on campus can open doors in ways students might not expect.
Looking ahead, Mayra plans to begin her career as a new graduate nurse in the ICU, bringing with her the resilience, experience, and dedication that have defined her journey at Illinois.
