Meet Garrett Anderson! Originally from Olive Branch, Illinois, and raised in Bellflower, Garrett brings a deep sense of dedication and lived experience to his work with military-connected students. As a student, Garrett began his academic journey at Parkland College before earning his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Illinois State University in 2010. He later completed his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Illinois in 2018.
Beyond academics, Garrett finds balance in the outdoors. He enjoys golfing and serves as a coach for Cross Country and Track & Field at a local high school—instilling not just physical discipline, but a sense of belonging and community that mirrors his work at the university.
At the Chez Veterans Center, Garrett serves as the Outreach Coordinator and Student Recruiter. His role includes recruiting military-connected students from community colleges and military bases, while also providing ongoing support to current students at the University of Illinois. As the advisor to the Illini Veterans Registered Student Organization, Garrett draws from his own experiences as a Veteran and someone with a service-connected disability to connect with and advocate for the students he serves.

One of the most meaningful parts of his job, Garrett says, is witnessing the growth of students as they transition from service members to successful scholars and professionals. “Knowing I played even a small part in that transition is incredibly rewarding,” he reflects. “Because I’ve been there, I understand where they’re coming from—and that trust makes all the difference.”
Garrett understands that for many, the biggest challenge lies in the transition itself: shifting from the structure and certainty of military life to the more open-ended environment of higher education. “It’s not always easy,” he says. “But I try to help students find that same sense of purpose and direction within their academic journey.”
His advice to fellow Veterans is simple but powerful: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Garrett emphasizes that the University of Illinois has a wide range of resources specifically designed for Veterans and military-connected students. “You don’t have to do this alone. We’re here to walk with you every step of the way.”
