Meet Andy Bender! He grew up in a small town in northern New York, where the values of hard work, service, and community shaped the foundation of his life. After earning a bachelor’s degree in history from Canisius College in Buffalo, Andy went on to complete a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Organizational Leadership. But it’s his military background that most profoundly informs his current work.

Today, Andy serves as the Director of Operations at the Chez Veterans Center, where he provides leadership, guidance, and support to a team dedicated to serving military-connected students. His experience in the military allows him to connect authentically with those he serves, understanding firsthand the unique challenges that come with transitioning from service to civilian life.
For Andy, the most meaningful part of his role isn’t tied to one standout moment—it’s the steady, everyday impact of being able to help a population whose lives have been shaped by service. Watching students find their footing, grow, and succeed brings him a deep sense of purpose.

He understands that transition is rarely straightforward. It’s complex, often overwhelming, and never quite the same for any two individuals. Because he’s been through that shift himself, Andy emphasizes meeting students where they are and guiding them at their own pace.
His advice to Veterans making the transition? “Make connections and ask for help,” he says. “It’s okay not to have all the answers, and no one will think less of you for reaching out. Building a support network and forming social connections can make a huge difference.”
Whether he’s helping students navigate university life or simply listening with empathy, Andy Bender is committed to making sure no Veteran has to face the transition alone.
