Cloie Widell, a 2024 graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, found more than just a place to study at the Chez Veterans Center—she found a community that shaped her senior year. As a member of the Illinois National Guard and an Interdisciplinary Health Sciences major, Cloie initially struggled to find her footing on campus. But once she discovered the welcoming environment of the Chez Veterans Center, everything changed. “The Chez Veterans Center has been instrumental in shaping my journey by fostering connections, enhancing my professional skills, and giving me the opportunity to contribute creatively to the student population,” she shared.
During her time at the center, Cloie served as a Social Media Assistant, working on impactful projects such as curating wellness resources for military-connected students in partnership with McKinley Health Center. Recognizing the financial challenges some student Veterans face, she also spearheaded the ‘Empowering Our Student Veterans’ fundraiser to support those in need. Through her leadership, dedication, and passion for advocacy, Cloie has left a lasting impact on the Chez Veterans Center and the students it serves.
As she moves forward in her career, Cloie carries with her the lessons and connections she built at the Chez Veterans Center. “I will forever thank the Chez Veterans Center for a great senior year,” she said. Her journey is a testament to the power of community and the vital role the center plays in supporting student Veterans and military-connected individuals at UIUC.
