Military Courses

Courses offered through the Chez Center include materials specifically related to Military/Veteran topics and are open to all students across campus. These courses are tailored to help fuse the societal military-civilian divide in U.S. culture.

Veterans Transition & Leadership

Course No. 54672

This course is open to all military-connected students and is particularly helpful to those transitioning to the University. The class is small, and students will engage in various reflective reading and writing assignments and learn about assistive resources on campus and within the community. The hero’s journey is a common theme explored throughout the course, and students will spend time thinking about their personal mission and how they want to maximize their time at Illinois.

Career Development for Military-Connected Students

This course specifically focuses on career development and professional success. Students will develop a resume and learn how to map out a career of interest while meeting their professional goals. Topics covered in the course include networking, professional mentoring and coaching, translating military experience, preparing for interviews, salary negotiation, and the importance of internships. This is an excellent course that will lead to successfully setting-up a lucrative internship and career opportunity.

Military Veterans: Community Health & Wellness

Military Veterans: Community Health & Wellness educates students on factors impacting Military/Veteran communities. The course includes an immersion into Military/Veteran culture before examining prominent community health issues impacting Military/Veteran cohorts and communities at large. Issues explored include military transitions and reintegration, suicide & mental health, Military Sexual Trauma, food insecurity and nutrition, substanceabuse, and homelessness. This course will include a service-learning component. Class will meet in room 1020 at the Chez Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education, 908 W. Nevada St., Urbana.
